Know your numbers
Do you know your numbers?

A week ago I shared my recommitment to a second year of focus on a journey intended to release excess body weight and improve my personal health and fitness.

As a reminder, I shared new goals for the year that are significantly more detailed than the short list I established a year ago.

Goals To Accomplish Within The Next 52 Weeks:

Weight: 225 lbs and Waist: 38"
Fitness: Walk a 5K, 10K, and Half-Marathon
Total Cholesterol: Under 200
LDL (Bad) Cholesterol: Under 100
Blood Pressure: 119/79 or below
BMI (Body Mass Index): Under 22.5

On Tuesday, the annual biometric screening appointment provided by my employer gave me a deeper look at the progress I've made and the distance I have to go. By answering a few questions, having height, weight, and body mass measured, and giving up a few drops of blood, this is what I learned.

Biometrics

The goals in this chart are, in most cases, not as aggressive as the more "optimum" goals that I established for myself. That's okay with me. I'll work toward the better outcome and have a conversation with my doctor in the coming weeks.

Another chart showed that I had little to worry about.  At least there was nothing listed in the yellow (caution) or red (concern) areas.

And then there was the final chart that summed it all up. The one that didn't seem to fit.

Somehow, despite the much improved blood pressure and cholesterol scores, I somehow seem to be off the chart when it comes to the potential for hypertension. Could it be that I lead a stressful life? Or maybe I just need an earlier bedtime.

I'll let you know what my doctor has to say.  In the meantime, I definitely want to encourage you to "know your numbers" and determine what your goals should be.
