Week One - 09-10-11

Twenty-Two Likes and One... "YOU DID WHAT!?"

Because you are reading this, you are likely aware that at 1:07 AM on Thursday, September 8th I posted a personal "Healthy Edge" commitment on my Facebook wall. I wrote it, posted it, and went to bed.

FB Wall Post 2
When I woke the next morning, and as Friday progressed, I was amazed and delighted to see a growing number of friends express their support for the journey I'm embarking on. Who would have imagined that an aging fat guy would cause people to click and comment simply by pledging to take better care of himself?

It was quite humbling and is something that means more to me than I can express.

To date, the post has been liked by 31 friends, has received a similar number of heartfelt comments. The Healthy Edge blog post has been shared nearly 60 times!

Like I said... I'm very appreciative. Thanks to each and every one of you who have taken an interest in my pledge and have expressed your encouragement. I won't let you down! (Just inserted more accountability there, Did you notice?)

Oh... And there was one additional reaction.

When Cindy and I arrived home from work Thursday night I realized that she had not had the time or opportunity to see what I had done. To open the conversation I said, "Well, I'm all in on this weight loss commitment." I told Cindy that I'd posted the plan for my journey on Facebook.

Without missing a beat, and while glaring at me like my head was on backwards, Cindy exclaimed, "YOU DID NOT!!! YOU DIDN"T POST YOUR WEIGHT ON FACEBOOK DID YOU?? GET IT OFF RIGHT NOW!!"... or words to that effect.

Apparently I was correct when I posed the question in the heading of my blog - "Courage or Stupidity?". In that moment I realized that the answer was probably the latter of the two choices -at least in our house.

There are definitely a number of ways to approach weight loss. For some, it gets done in private. I didn't think that would work for me. So maybe I'm the outlier. Cindy and I talked about it and I know she understands. She still thinks I'm a little crazy, but I know that like so many of you, she supports and encourages me 110%.

By the way, Thursday and Friday of week one went really well. I have a family reunion to attend tomorrow and my cousins, aunts, and sisters really know how to cook. Today I'll come up with a battle plan to get me through the maze of great temptations!

Your comments, suggestions, and stories of your personal edge are always welcome in my guest book.
